Counter-UAS System Architecture

A reference system-of-systems architecture for Counter-UAS applications, combining heterogeneous sensing, signal processing, tracking, and operational management functions. The project addresses the integration of multiple technologies within a modular architecture for detecting and characterizing drone activity.

Counter-UAS System Architecture

Technical overview

The architecture combines passive and active sensing elements with processing and communications functions. RF sensing examines electromagnetic emissions associated with drones and their control stations, while information from complementary sensors supports detection, classification, and tracking.

Signal analysis and processing functions include direction finding, correlative interferometry, and classification algorithms. A common software environment brings together monitoring, recording, equipment control, and the presentation of operational information.

The modular concept encompasses fixed, mobile, and portable configurations, with individual elements operating independently or as part of a wider network. System-level interfaces connect sensing and processing functions with external command-and-control and countermeasure elements.

The project illustrates multidisciplinary engineering across RF electronics, digital processing, software, communications, and system integration. Detection coverage and overall performance depend on the selected sensors, deployment geometry, propagation conditions, and characteristics of the signals being observed.
